The Emperor's Clothes (Detroit, San Francisco, Palestine, 4 mins)
Directed by Maha Bazzy and Wesley Taylor
    Score by K-Salaam and Beatnick
Footage by Vanessa Huang and Al Jazeera Creative Commons Depository Poster artwork by Melanie Cervantes, Faviana Rodriguez, and Jesus Barraza
    Produced by EMERGENCE

In January 2009, Israel launched an assault on the Gaza Strip, causing massive damage to civilian infrastructure, killing more than 1,300 Palestinians and wounding 5,300. Israel has held Gaza under siege, controlling the borders, air and water space, preventing even the most basic humanitarian goods from entering.

The Emperor’s Clothes is a call to action. One of the most effective strategies we can pursue right now is boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaigns against Israel, as we demand an end to Israel's 60-plus years of occupation and war on Palestinian life.

People Not Places (Detroit, New York, Palestine, 12 min)
    Directed by Iqaa The Olivetone
    Score by Vaughan T (LABTECHS)
Produced by EMERGENCE and Palestine Education Project

This docu-music-video is based on the song of the same name by Invincible featuring Abeer and Suhell Nafar (DAM). Invincible plays two characters in the video: a Birthright Israel tour recruiter, styled as a used car salesman; and herself, subverting the recruiter’s mission by exposing the buried Palestinian significance of each location in the tour.

Invincible exposes the process of historic and continued colonization of Palestine as being even deeper than land seizure and ethnic cleansing, but one that attempts to erase the indigenous language, culture, and memory of Palestinians.

Intertwined with the music video are interviews that expose how Zionist claims to a Jewish “birthright” to Palestine have come at the expense of the Palestinian Right of Return to their indigenous land. These interviews show how the Right of Return of Palestinians is interconnected with the resistance of occupied and displaced refugee communities globally, from Turtle Island to Puerto Rico and beyond.

People Not Places is featured on Invincible's ShapeShifters album, available in the EMERGENCE Store.

The current episode of Fault Lines on the Al Jazeera English network looks at "the collapsing auto industry in Detroit and explores the effect on this once thriving American city." EMERGENCE Media consulted on the development of this episode, especially Part 2 which focuses on the resilience, resistance and sustainable solutions being built in the city.

More info about "Despair in Detroit" produced by Fault Lines for Al Jazeera English:

As the US auto-industry continues to teeter on the verge of collapse, Fault Lines visits Detroit - Motor City - which, understandably, is one of the hardest hit places by the downturn.

But this is not the first time the Michigan city has faced hardship.

Even before the financial crisis exploded, Detroit had the highest home foreclosure rate in the country.

It also has highest unemployment rate of any major US city and in the auto sector alone, one in three jobs has vanished since the recession began.

In Washington, president Barack Obama's auto task force is re-engineering the fates of General Motors and Chrysler, and the millions of people who depend on their survival.

Avi Lewis meets the people who live with the consequences of the deals struck in the nation's capital.

The third music video off Invincible's acclaimed ShapeShifters (2008), "Ropes" addresses the often taboo subject of depression and suicide.

After being accepted by mtvU, the station's standards department axed the video citing how its "suicidal undertones would be problematic" for a college audience. Ironically, Invincible and Tiombe's intention with the song is to speak openly and boldly about the prevalence of depression in our communities. With suicide being the third leading cause of death amongh 15-24 year-olds, "Ropes" aims to break the pattern of turning a blind eye to metal health issues, and to begin the process of healing.

"Ropes" was shot at Coney Island's Astroland on a cold, dreary and rainy day. Rumor has it that historic Astroland will soon be razed to the ground and developed into unaffordable lofts or condos, so this footage is visual preservation as well.

"Ropes" is written and performed by Invincible featuring Tiombe Lockhart over a beat created by Knowledge. The music video is directed by Mr. Complex and the vlog intro was shot by Iqaa the Olivetone and edited by Wesley Taylor.

"Ropes" is featured on the ShapeShifters album, available in the EMERGENCE Store.
